Stumps
Stump Grinding in Portsmouth, VA
We grind stumps several inches below the surface so you can plant grass, lay mulch or build right over the spot.

Overview
How we handle stump grinding
A stump left behind is a trip hazard, a mower obstacle and an open invitation for termites and fungus. Grinding is the fastest and cleanest fix. Our grinder chews the stump and the top of the root flare into mulch-like chips, leaving a shallow hole you can fill and seed.
Before we grind, we mark any irrigation lines or utilities you tell us about, and we call in a utility locate when needed. You can keep the grindings for mulch or we can haul them off.
Serving Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News, Smithfield, Williamsburg, Yorktown and Poquoson.

How deep do you grind?
Typically several inches below grade, which is plenty for grass and most plantings. If you need it deeper for construction, tell us when we quote.
Will the roots keep growing?
Grinding removes the stump and top of the root flare. Most remaining roots slowly decay. Some species can sprout once or twice afterward, which is easy to handle.
Are your estimates really free?
Yes. No charge and no pressure to book. You get a straight answer and a firm price.
Do you clean up and haul everything away?
Yes. Cleanup is part of the job: brush chipped, wood hauled and hard surfaces blown off. If you want firewood or wood chips left behind, just ask.
